• Anyone who has found themselves in the library or bookshop, and needs help deciding - when in doubt, get both.​
• Completists who need to read every Booker Prize winner, or every book You Must Read Before You Die.
• Readers who want to read something different - not what was also bought by other people who bought your current book.
• Authors looking for acclamation.

A NOTE ON AWARDS

The awards are mainly from the UK and US.  They are all awards that are given for particular books.  There are many prizes that are awarded to authors based on their body of work.  These awards may be added to the database in the future.

A NOTE ON LISTS

Must-Read lists can be problematic.  Lists compiled by 'experts' can be criticised for prejudices such as ethnocentrism and sexism, and will inevitably omit books deemed essential.  Lists compiled by public poll can be subject to 'ballot stuffing'.  In addition, the very idea of being told that there are books that one must read, can somewhat stick in the craw.
